The Holidays

Thanksgiving is my least favorite holiday. It is centered around family and food. I have issues with both. I love my parents (and my brother at times) but our extended family is somewhat dysfunctional. I love food but have to work to keep it off my belly and hips, and I actually prefer fresh, semi-vegetarian, healthy food over stodge anyway. Thanksgiving is a recipe for disaster!

Luckily, this year, all turned out well. We went to a restaurant so there were no ridiculous amounts of leftovers to chow down on for days afterwards. No fighting over how to cook each dish. No clean-up. No family over for hours on end. No requirement to eat Thanksgiving fare. I feasted on fresh green salad, baked salmon, sourdough bread, chocolate cake (one has to splurge a bit) and probably too much chardonnay - much more my idea of a feast!

The family part of Thanksgiving turned out surprisingly well too - I'm sure the wine helped a bit. Everyone was on their best behavior and it made me very thankful that I have such a good relationship with my parents. You all know I am an Atheist (I know I've rammed that down your throat often enough!) but for lack of a better word, I truly felt blessed on Thursday. Thank goodness the feeling has now passed. I am much happier when I am complaining and wishing I had it better.

Now the holiday season begins! I love Christmas. Love it, love it, love it! It is even more fun with a child at home. I want to make the holidays a magical, special time for my son. I want him to have everything his heart desires. I am going to have to work very, very hard to not spoil him too much at Christmas.

Changes

If I ever were to write an autobiography (how boring would that book be????), this should be the title of it. My life is constantly changing. I do very well with planned change. I have always loved moving house, starting a new school, new job, etc, etc, etc. It's the unplanned change that drives me nuts. I am not a happy camper when unplanned change occurs in my life, particularly if several unplanned changes happen at once.

Which brings me to the promised update (it is VERY long - don't feel you have to read it if you're not interested!). I kept putting off writing it because there was so much uncertainty with the direction my life was going, at least in the short-term. I have my long-term life plan set: become a nurse, work for a couple years, buy a house, have baby #2, quickly followed by baby #3 and live happily ever after with my husband and 3 children in our lovely Bay Area house while I work as a Labor & Delivery nurse and James makes his millions selling his compositions. No problems with the long-term plan.

The short-term plan, on the other hand, are all over the place. You all know I dropped out of the Associate's Degree nursing program I was enrolled in, due to the poor education and quite frankly, fraud that was occuring at the school (the Merritt College drama still continues, but that's another post). I then decided I was going to do a 6 week Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) program and work as a CNA before getting accepted into another nursing school. I also planned to take the remaining prerequisite courses I needed for the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program I decided to apply for. The prerequisite part of my plan remained the same, as did my decision to apply for the BSN program for next year. I am currently in a Statistics course and will be taking Pharmacology and Pathophysiology (both online courses) from January-March. I have applied for the 12 month Accelerated BSN (ABSN) program at Samuel Merritt; it begins May 25, 2009 and I should know whether or not I've been accepted within the next couple months. If I am not accepted, I will apply for their 2 year program which begins at the end of August (and again in January 2010 if I'm not accepted the first time).

The CNA program I enrolled in fell through (before it began). It will be starting in January now (which is too late for my plans, and we will be in England for the start of it anyway). Luckily, everything does happen for a reason, right? This must mean I will get into the ABSN program at Samuel Merritt. It has to! Additionally, I will be returning to my old job as an administrative assistant for the accounting firm I worked at for several years. It just so happens that one of their admin assistants will be out on maternity leave during tax season (January-April). Those are the exact months I need a job for - we return from England in mid-January and hopefully I will start school in May. I didn't want to look for a job before we left because our trip is 3 weeks long - it's highly unlikely any place would hire me, only to have me leave for 3 weeks shortly after my hire. I will be working at the firm from mid/late January until the end of April/early May. Perfect (if I get accepted into the ABSN program)! I will be part-time to start (while I am doing my 2 online courses) and then most likely full-time (plus likely overtime) for the last month of tax season. It couldn't have worked out better (for my bosses as well as for me - tax season is not a good time for them to be down an employee). The only downside is the commute to Half Moon Bay, but it is a temporary job. There's no way I'd find a job closer to home that pays the same and just happens to need me for the exact dates I need them. Plus, I loved that job. I made so many really good friends there (who are still in my life) and my bosses created a wonderful environment to work in. They truly care about their employees and offer generous salaries, benefits (which I won't be getting since I'll be temporary) and a lot of other perks. During tax season, they provide free meals, snacks and drinks, overtime pay (time and a half), massages and more. I am so lucky my bosses valued me enough to want me back...I really need a job. Our savings is going fast. We'll be taking out loans for me to attend school, but we didn't want to have to take out any loans prior to that. Any loans I take out specifically for school (and living expenses rendered while attending school) may be partially reimbursed by whichever hospital hires me when I'm a registered nurse. I love the nursing shortage!

So anyway, plans change. They may change again. If I don't get into the ABSN program, I'll have to find another temporary admin job after tax season. C'est la vie. I have a wonderful son who really makes change easier for me. You have to be flexible with a child. There's no other option! In the past, these kinds of intense unexpected changes would have hit me really hard. While they still hit me hard this time, I haven't been able to truly wallow in my disappointment. Dorian won't let me. And to be honest, it's been really nice having both James and I home for much of the fall. Dorian loves it...he's so happy when we're all together. This time is so important for his development, so I feel grateful we've both been able to spend so much time with him. My Statistics course is coming along just fine and is a welcome relief every week-end - I don't do well with being a full-time parent (as much as I love my son). I am spending loads of time with Dorian, taking him to play groups and classes - as long as we have things to do outside the house, we are both happy and I enjoy my time with him. We are spending time with friends and making tons of new ones (I should have had a child years ago - I've never had this many friends!). James has been able to get some special projects done, and has continued to gig with the band on week-ends. He has his last gig of the year this week-end. We leave for England in a month and are very excited to be spending 3 weeks with family and friends. Life is good. Life is really, really good.

Statistics exam

Yay, I aced my first Statistics midterm - a big accomplishment, considering it's an accelerated course and the teacher is the worst teacher ever.

I know I owe you all an update on "my life." Will write a long overdue blog over the next few days.

PROTEST PROP 8 TOMORROW!

I received the below email forward today (thank you, Patricia, for sending it on to me).

I so wish I could go, but I have my first Statistics midterm exam tomorrow afternoon.

Please, please, please go if you can (or at least go to your local courthouse at the same time as mentioned below)!!!!

-------------------------

Dear Queer friends and allies,

We may have lost one battle, but this fight is NOT over. Please join me this Sunday at 1pm in Sacramento (at the State Capital) to represent the millions of Californians that will not stand for discrimination being written into our constitution. This will be just one of the many protests we will have to organize. We will not be able to win this battle in one day, or even in one year. The fight for our civil rights needs to be waged, and now is the time! We cannot give up! African Americans, Women, Latinos, Jews, and every other group that has been marginalized/oppressed didn't just have their rights given to them, they took them. Our time is now, we must organize...WE HAVE TO UNITE!

We will be creating flyers, blogs, and contacting the local news stations. I need you all to help me out with this. This is a sad day... but we cannot take this quietly. We can plan carpools to Sacramento, and maybe even rent a bus.

You may be asking yourself, what can I do?

*Call/text every person in your phone book and get them to join us on Sunday(if you live to far, plan your own protest at your City Hall building for the same time).

*Forward this on to every contact you have, post it on your facebook, myspace, blogs... get the word out!

*SHOW UP! This is YOUR time to stand up for your beliefs and NOT wait for other people to defend your fundamental human rights.

Please remember this is not just a GAY issue, this is a human issue.

In Solidarity,

Bittersweet Ending

Obama won, Obama won, OBAMA WON!!!!!!! In addition, the majority of the House and Senate is now Democrat. I am so proud to be an American right now. I am ashamed to be a Californian (strange, usually these two statements are reversed). Prop 8 passed - the ban on same-sex marriage was voted in by 52.7% of Californians. So close! All the Bay Area counties except one voted against the ban. Can't the Bay Area break off from the rest of California and become its own state? I am so disappointed. I actually shed tears today. It is so unfair. How can people still be so close-minded???? It boggles my mind. I just don't understand it! The majority of blacks and hispanics in California voted yes, as did the majority of people over the age of 30.

I am happy about the results of some of the other propositions - specifically, Prop 4 (Abortion Waiting Period and Parental Notification Initiative) did not pass and Prop 2 (Standards for Confining Farm Animals) did. I love this comment someone just posted on sfgate.com:

"The rights of farm animals were protected and the right of HUMANS who are gay were rejected. What does this say about California voters?"

Oh, it's all so bittersweet. I keep fluctuating between moments of hope and excitement, and sadness, anger and despair. I guess that's life for you.

VOTE NO ON PROP 8!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't know why this proposition speaks to me so strongly. To be honest, I've never much been one for politics. Don't get me wrong, I always vote and I sometimes have strong opinions about certain issues. But James is the political person in our house...see, I don't even know the correct "political vocab" to use! So bear with me.

I am more anxious about Prop 8 being passed than Obama losing. It's very strange. While it would suck big time to have another 4 years with a Republican in the presidential seat, I think it would be devastating to have Proposition 8 passed. (For you Brits, Swiss and other non-Californians, click here for details.)

I just can not believe people, CALIFORNIANS no less, would support a proposition to eliminate same-sex marriage. WHY? If you're straight, how does it affect you? It doesn't! Why should you care if gay people can get married or not? It infuriates me to no end. This is the 21st century, people. There was a time when black people could not marry outside their race...that time is no more. This should be the same thing.

Which brings me to today...I walked around busy parts of Oakland, pushing Dorian in his stroller and proudly displaying my "No on Prop 8" sign. I got some honks, waves and thumbs-up but I also got some people walking past who said "Yes on Prop 8" (or something to that effect). There were about 7-8 of them. Now, I am sorry to generalize here (TRULY I AM) but I am mad. They were all black people. Only Caucasians beeped, waved or gave me the thumbs up. Of course I know there are black people who will vote against Prop 8 and Caucasians who will vote for it, but I was pretty pissed today. My mom and I were talking about it, and we are assuming this is because many of the African-Americans in Oakland attend church (don't get me started again on religion!). Once again, I am generalizing here and truly do not mean to offend anyone, but it seems to me that African-Americans would want to vote no on Prop 8. It wasn't so long ago they were in the same boat! I just don't get it.

Anyway, there was one interaction I had today that actually makes me laugh. I was at a stoplight and this black man said to me, "Are you and your partner currently married?" I said, "Yes, my husband and I are." The man said, "Oh, you're not a lesbian?" I shook my head. He asked, "Why are you doing this then?" I responded, "Because it's the right thing to do!" He said "Well, I'm voting 'yes.'" Right. Because only gay people are against Prop 8. Surely straight people are all for it.

Tomorrow James is going to accompany me for part of the day...we're going to carry "No on Prop 8" signs and push our adorably cute Dorian in his stroller. A straight couple with a child who is fully against Prop 8. If anyone wants to join us, please let me know. I also hope to go out with some other moms and their babies and do the same thing tomorrow and then again on Tuesday. Surely if enough of us do this, we CAN make a difference. The online polls show the race is so close...I couldn't live with myself if I didn't at least try to get a few more votes for the "No" side.

No on Proposition 8. STAY EVOLVED!
